Wood is the building material greener
When it comes to green building materials, wood is still best option. It is renewable, sustainable and less carbon to produce than other materials.
When trees are felled for their timber, new ones are planted, grown for their timber and the process continues. When handled responsibly, forests without deliberate forestry, renewable and environmental impacts are minimized. Reports show forests in North America are booming Due to management practices and long-term planning.
Wood has many uses, furniture cabinets for paper and frame. Depend on wood for thousands of products. Can be used in interior and exterior projects, painted, stained, assembled and fit. Wood can be recovered and used to do more without depleting resources, or be returned to the soil to biodegrade. Compared to other building materials as a percentage higher material timber can be used which creates less waste. pieces of wood can be used to make other wood products as a source of heat or made into chips for animals.
One of the goals of green building is to reduce the amount emissions of carbon dioxide and, ideally, produce a carbon neutral building. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings consume 72 per cent of electricity and 39 per cent of energy in the United States, representing 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. Trees absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and return oxygen in the air. Wood also store carbon until burns or decomposes, it is a carbon material negative.
According to data published by the Architectural Institute of Wood (AWI) the amount of carbon needed to produce one ton of wood processing or medium density fibreboard (MDF) is significantly less, if not thousands of books less than any other materials including steel, concrete or aluminum. Plastic takes more carbon, which represents more than 5,000 pounds per ton. When the amount of carbon stored in the timber is taken into account, wood and MDF are carbon negative, creating the basis for building carbon neutral.
In addition to its environmental benefits, wood is strong, durable and aesthetic. Available in different species, grain and color. Other materials such as stone, iron and coal, are limited in quantity and can not be replaced or recycled as wood.
